Mount Batur is one of the most famous mountains in Bali, and if you’re planning a trip to the island, trekking to the top is an experience you shouldn't miss. The great news? Mount Batur is beginner-friendly and doesn’t take too long to conquer.

However, if it’s your first time, it’s highly recommended to hire a local guide. They know the best tips and the safest routes to reach the summit, making your trek a lot smoother and more enjoyable.

But first, let’s break down the four popular trekking routes to the top of Mount Batur.

4 Trekking Routes to Conquer Mount Batur

1. Via Pasar Agung

Trekking Mendaki ke Gunung Batur 3

Duration: 60-75 minutes

Round Trip Distance: 6.5 km

Taking the Pasar Agung route is the shortest way to the top. You’ll start by passing through Pura Jati and then head to Pura Pasar Agung Batur. From there, you can ride a motorbike or car up to the base of Mount Batur.

The first part of the trek is quite rocky, and you’ll spend about 30-40 minutes navigating these rough paths. Once past the rocky section, you’ll reach the second peak, called Puncak Kanginan, at 1,580 meters above sea level, where you can catch a beautiful sunrise.

If you choose to go further, it takes about 30 more minutes to reach the main summit. Be prepared for a sandy and slippery trail, so wear shoes with good grip and consider bringing a hiking pole for balance.

2. Via Serongga

Trekking Mendaki ke Gunung Batur

Duration: 80-100 minutes

Round Trip Distance: 10 km

The Serongga route is similar to the Toya Bungkah route, but the final 30 minutes are much tougher due to loose, sandy terrain. It can be quite exhausting, so make sure you’re physically prepared.

The viewpoint on this route is only at the summit, so push yourself to make it to the top for that breathtaking sunrise view. The trek starts from Songan Village, so leave early since it’s around 5 km away from Toya Bungkah’s parking lot.

3. Via Toya Bungkah

Trekking Mendaki ke Gunung Batur

Duration: 75-90 minutes

Round Trip Distance: 9 km

The Toya Bungkah route is the most recommended, especially for beginners. Most local guides suggest this route because it’s relatively easy compared to the others.

About 80% of the path is well-maintained and not too steep, thanks to the improvements made since 2017 by the Batur Mountain Ojek Association. Motorbikes can go up to about 80% of the route at 1,650 meters. The last 20% involves a 15-20 minute hike over mild rocky terrain.

This route offers three viewpoints at the 50%, 80%, and summit points. If you’re feeling tired, you can take a break at one of these spots and still enjoy the sunrise. The trail winds through shaded forests of acacia and eucalyptus trees, so it’s not too hot while climbing.

4. Via Culali or Bukit Mentik

Trekking Mendaki ke Gunung Batur

Duration: 2.5-3 hours

Round Trip Distance: 13 km

This is the longest and most challenging route, so start trekking while it’s still dark, or camp overnight near Batur’s new crater, which erupted in 2000. The campsite is spacious and safe, offering a unique experience before the hike.

This route may take longer, but it’s worth it for the adventurous soul. Plus, you’ll have a chance to see the new crater, which adds a historical twist to your journey.
